The Origin of German Boxer and their intended purpose

     German boxer is dog breed belongs to the group of Molossoid dog breeds – mastiff type (the first document of molosser dog dates from 1121. BC. Generally, they are dogs with: strong bones, impressive size, cubical short muzzle with wide jaws, relatively short and well muscled neck with thickened and wrinkled skin. Molsser are used for protection of the master and his property, flock guardian dogs either like as war dogs and dogs for fighting with other animals as hunters and as a gladiator in the arena - in Ancient Rome).

     As a dog breed, Boxer is created in Germany in the second half of the 19th century from, now extinct, dog breed Danziger Bullenbeisser (that was in order of size larger breed) and Brabenter Bullenbeisser (that was in order of size smaller breeds). Bullenbeisser dogs were used to hunt wild boars, deers and small bears so they overcome the hunted animals and held it with theirs jaws until the master comes and kills hunted animals. That way of hunting is demanded strong, but agile dogs with a wide and powerful jaws and specific muzzle so the dog was able to breathe while his jaw was firmly plunged into prey. Until 1835. in England was a very popular sport called Bull-Baiting, which consisted of the fact that dogs of mentioned type, disable and kill enraged bull. For this purpose are used English Bulldogs, which has no resemblance to the English Bulldog of today, but it was related with: English Mastiff , Alano dog and German molosser.
At 26th of February in 1895., the Flocki (Mühlbauer's Flocki) is born (whose breeder was Andrew Nerf, and owner George Muhlbauer, both from Munich), he was the first German Boxer in history and he got number 1 in German studbook. However, as the mother of the breed is considered Meta von der Passage, which was born on 02 November of 1898 (whose breeder was Andrew Nerf and owner Joseph Frey, both from Munich).

The origin of the name of the breed - Boxer, is linked to a number of theories:
1. theory is related to their distinctive gameplay that features lifting on the rear legs and "striking" with front legs paws, which reminds to boxing kicks .
2. theory is associated with race Brabenter Bullenbeisser which was known as Boxel, and the Boxer was created as a derivative of the word.
3. theory is that the name is derived from the name of the Bierboxer dog breed which were the dogs very similar to Bullenbeisser dog breed. The race was created in the beer gardens - Biergarten, the typical for Munich at that time, where the dogs were released to mate freely on their own, while their owners having refreshment with beer - thence the word Bier which means beer.

     Boxer is one of the first dog breeds, which was used as a police and military dog in Germany. Until 1900., he was known as a working dog, family pet, and even a circus dog. As a service dog, the reasons he gained his reputation are: his courage, tenacity, which has certainly contributed to his firm and short body. Boxer dog has gained sympathy because his good nature with which it fits into the family, and his pleased with the limited space in the apartment. Regardless of his good nature, when it comes to the defense of the owner or guarded thing, he actively enters into the fight to protect them. Character of the Boxer is of the greatest importance, and should be carefully developed.
